Site name Former Commercial/Recreational Land, Norton Canes
Area 8.5 Hectares
Role Environmental Consultants
ASL operated as geo-environmental consultant for this large brownfield site which comprised areas of former greyhound race track and a large area of colliery spoil land that had been reclaimed together with areas of open land. An extensive ground investigation was undertaken to establish the ground conditions across the site to identify any potential constraints to the proposed development.
The site is proposed to be redeveloped for a residential end use comprising approximately two hundred and fifty residential properties. The intrusive investigation identified significant thickness of colliery spoil across a large proportion of the site and subsequent ground gas monitoring identified highly elevated concentrations of carbon dioxide within these areas.
The works completed by ASL comprise the following:
Assessment of the site’s history and environmental setting
A site wide intrusive investigation
Construction of groundwater and ground gas monitoring wells
Design of chemical testing regime to characterise the site conditions and investigate potential contamination issues
Interpretation and quantitative assessment of results for contamination issues
Design of appropriate gas protections measure for the proposed development, using a zoned approach, providing the most cost effective solution for the client.
