Former Timber Yard

Area:  3.1 Hectares

Development:  Residential

Services: Geotechnical Investigation and Contaminated Land Risk Assessment

ASL is operating as geo-environmental consultants for a national house builder on this brownfield development in Berkhamsted.  The site is located on a chalk aquifer used for potable supply and the River Bulbourne transects the site.

With these environmental constraints and the proposed change of land use from industrial (timber works and distribution units) to residential ASL managed to complete the investigation and assessment of the site without the need for large scale remediation.  Localised hotspots were removed for off site disposal and a groundwater and surface water monitoring programme were completed as part of the remediation of the site.

The works completed by ASL comprise the following:

  • Review of previously completed reports, historical data, the site’s environmental setting and current land use
  • Supplementary intrusive investigation across the site
  • Design of chemical testing regime to characterise the site conditions and investigate potential contamination issues
  • Interpretation and quantitative assessment of results for contamination issues
  • Design and implementation of a remediation strategy, demolition specification and environmental monitoring strategy for the site
  • Groundwater and surface water quality monitoring programme
  • Liaison with regulatory authorities to obtain sign off of the relevant planning conditions
